Adobe messes with users, customers and its shareholders

When Adobe announced the exclusive creative cloud subscription model, yours truly felt like shouting against it during the daily call.

In fact, Adobe’s arrogance will cost a heck of a lot of money: to the company, the shareholders, and to users who will get less for more money.

While signing the petition against Adobe’s most recent move ( here is the link: http://www.change.org/petitions/adobe-systems-incorporated-eliminate-the-mandatory-creative-cloud-subscription-model?utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition ) may put some pressure on the company, I guess posting about your indignation on your blog, social networks and wherever you have access to will have a solid impact on Adobe’s online reputation.

Finally, we are the consumers and what Adobe and others have not yet understood: we, the consumers decide over life or death of companies, mainly arrogant ones such as Adobe.

Once more, the fascination of the full moon drove me out early taking just my point and shoot camera along to see what is possible with low end tools in a high end scenario.

You can vaguely see the neighbors roof top on the lower part of the image, meaning that I needed to get out of bed for a better position.

Also, a few minutes later, the daylight would start to kick in and I just wanted to get a view of the Vouliagmeni Bay under that beautiful light of the moon.

Just to give you an idea about the situation: my neighbor, then the Vouliagmeni Bay and on the other side, Astir Beach and the Astir Hotel complex, then the sea and in the very background the island of Aegina. Note on the horizon the big ferry boat driving in from the left towards Piraeus Port which is at about 35 km north from here.

Now it’s just about waiting and hoping for the right light when the day meets the full moon:

Luckily the passenger ship is still in the frame as well as a second, red painted transporter.

Once more we see: even a point and shoot camera can come home with nice shots in difficult light. Note that the last shot was just taken in Automatic mode (!) while the previous ones were taken with manual settings.

Of course one could work the image in Photoshop to make it more attractive by intervening on the foreground, the temperature and more; however, this is where we reach quickly the limits of the files. These pictures are just not good enough for heavy manipulation in Photoshop, the more that we cannot get rich RAW files from that camera.

I like them anyway :-).

Hence, the need for a new responsive script arose. After working for years on Semiomantics XO, this month’s Ycademy Seminar focuses on the new release of the latest, the finest and the hottest WordPress based responsive script : XR!

Therefore, the motto of this month’s Ycademy Seminar April 2013 is ‘responsive’. It’s more complex than one assumes as we can’t just switch to a ‘XO responsive’! The fact is that a dramatic change has taken place to keep us at the forefront of modern web developments, and the brand-new XR was born.

It’s a new era! A new start! A new challenge!

Fortunately, as Semiomantics experts we already have a good foundation as to what is needed in technical terms and skills. At this seminar we want to deepen and refine it. One needs to learn how to work easily and effortlessly within the new environment. This requires more knowledge and skills in terms of Code, i.e.html 5 and css 3. And, much more!

So here’s to today’s Ycademy Seminar on XR – Theory and Praxis: How to edit, configure, optimize and customize XR.

Based on the full XR developer version, we will go through all the features, learn how to replace our XO, and how to create Child Themes for XR.

And this: it’s fascinating how much excellent digital photography actually is out there; an inspiration to try to get a little better each time we go out and shoot!

The first thing to do after the Cape Autumn Storm was a round through my garden here in Noordhoek, South Africa, to see the extent of the damage. Camera in hand, of course!

Luckily, the trees and plants were more flexible due to the heavy rains and, accordingly, we had to spend the day merely to get back some ‘order’ – as far as that is possible and desirable in a wild garden like mine! Nature in the so-called “richest floral kingdom in the world’ is diverse and astonishing enough without too much of our interference, however, regular clean-ups are a must as ‘normally’ fynbos and proteas just burn down every 15 or so years – that’s normal. And then life starts all new again, rising like phoenix from the ashes.

One fire like the one we went through is enough for a life time – so the alternative is to regularly control what’s coming down in the storms or what’s coming up in terms of alien vegetation, especially Port Jackson, rooikrans, myrtle and hakea. Pines and blue gums are also known to suck up a lot of water; hence the need to control their growth and distribution.

The massive stone pine above has already gone through the historic fires that swept through the Cape Peninsula in the year 2000, where everything you see on this picture went up in 30 m high flames! One can still see the marks on the bark. It’s a serene place to simply sit and spend some quiet time, leaning against the stem.

This is where I discovered the plane tree leaf below, all glistening in magnificent autumn colours. Ideal for some digital photography – another exercise!

After the Cape Autumn Storm

Here you see Holly, our border collie, assisting with the clean-up after the Cape autumn storm yesterday! She had a good time!

Within 24 hours, our small dam filled up by about 50%! All it needs now is one more time like this one! We waited forever last year; it just didn’t happen! So finally the earth could absorb the much needed water after the scorching summer days.

Even the first wet and extremely violent Autumn Storms in Noordhoek, South Africa, that literally turned off the lights, did not keep me from putting on my boots and taking a few low-light shots in the garden with my new photo camera, the Fuji X-E1, which has a reputation of being very good at exactly that – contrary to my good old NIKON Coolpix P90.

Well, although such small images are not optimal, the fact is that what was said above – and this by reputable photo camera reviewers like Ken Rockwell –  is definitely the truth and the steep difference in price is deserved. In Digital Photography – as in anything in life for that matter – you get what you pay for.  I had to wait for a while… but I am very happy now! While this camera is not a high-end one yet, professionally speaking, it’s perfect for my current transition where I am including more and more printed matter (for books, for instance). Besides, there’s a lot of learning and experimenting to be done before this discreet little machine has released all its power and secrets!

Whoever knows our place will certainly immediately recognize the unique atmosphere; be it in the vast serene lines and the diversity within a multitude of little shapes and details. It’s  real, it’s authentic – that I like.

Autumn Storms in Noordhoek

Here’s another shot for today’s picture series called “Autumn Storms in Noordhoek”, this time towards the mountain range in the east (Silvermine Nature Reserve), where the sun normally arrives in the morning. Sun? No more sun today – just storms, rains and a gloomy darkness. But Nature needs it and so we are grateful!

As to the X-E1: the finesse in terms of details and the lack of noise are simply amazing …this is a real photo camera!

If this tiny- completely untouched but reduced (yes!) – detail of an original digital photo of a Zimbabwe Creeper in my garden in Noordhoek, South Africa, looks different from other pictures taken before, guess why!

See the original, untouched (but obviously reduced) image of the Zimbabwe Creeper straight from my brand-new Fujifim X-E1 camera that fell as ‘holy smoke’ into my lap on 13th March 2013! The finesse in the tiny detail – marked on the original here as you see – is simply amazing! And when I took this first picture I had not really studied the vast array of settings yet – and I am still looking forward to go through each and every step with more time!

My brand-new Fujifilm X-E1 camera surprised me by being slightly bigger and a bit heavier than my NIKON Coolpix P90! I wouldn’t have thought so, probably based on the elegant, discreet and very minimalistic design, not unlike a Leica. But it’s an incredible machine, that needs careful study and lots of exercise! One thing is clear: with this camera I will return back to the past of good old ‘normal’ cameras – it’s that kind of approach this camera deserves. Of course, having interchangeable lenses makes a big difference in the whole feeling. Here I am using the 18 – 55 mm lens that comes with the kit, however, I am waiting for the 200 mm lens set to come onto the market sometime this year! By then I should even know how to use it LOL

Of course, I experimented already a little with Photoshop, especially as the fine design and transparencies of this photo both dazzled and inspired me! It has to be seen enlarged at 1:1 – but the design of detail is terrific!

Of course, there’s been more in the meantime, and I will come back with it… but currently it’s ‘cleaning up the garden after storms (and before next storms) time’ – so I won’t go into that kind of loud and noisy chaos with my new baby!

This post discusses three ways of customizing the new XR Theme for WordPress in view of the upcoming Ycademy Online Seminar:

1. Theme Options
2. Custom CSS
3. Child Themes
4. More Options

Before we customize a WordPress theme, we need to clearly define our project and goals we want to achieve in order to decide at which level we need to intervene.

Also, the project will define the workflow and importance of the intervention.

First let’s start by checking out the native theme options; XR theme options allow to implement basic branding options, such as colors, fonts, logo as well as to define layout elements and display of the frontpage.

XR Theme Options

XO comes with quite a lot of built-in ready to use options. With a few clicks, your site changes face and adapts to most any need.

Most users will be satisfied by just using just Theme Options.

These Theme Options are found from the dashboard under ‘Appearance’.

Other Theme related options are built in shortcodes; these add editing features such as buttons, tabs or others as specified on the shortcode page.

XR Shortcodes

If Theme Options are not sufficient to tweak the theme to needs, then the next step to consider is the Style sheet. CSS customizations can easilybe added right from the dashboard, using the Custom CSS tab under ‘Appearance’ or directly from the top menu bar.

The built in CSS editor helps writing clean code; the code added is stored in the data base and injected into the header script.

For minor modifications, the custom style sheet comes in handy. However, the disadvantage consists in the fact that the custom styles are injected into the header of the theme (check it out from the source code as per below):

This inconvenience can be taken care of by custom optimizing the theme once the design customization is done with.

Alternatively and for more important custom styling, I would rather use a child theme wrapping up the style sheet properly as external style.css file.

Child themes are used for advanced customization, namely when there is a need for tweaks going beyond pure style and design elements.

While most design changes can be handled from Theme Option settings and Custom CSS, functional tweaks and structural changes are done by creating a Child Theme, adding namely elements to functions.php as well as template files.

XR Child

Once you have explored the above 3 levels of intervention, there is still room for more, namely when it comes to add functionality to the site. In many cases this can be achieved by adding plugins.

XR is designed for easy customization. Most users will find the Theme Optimization tools provided in the dashboard sufficient to implement all necessary modifications.

Advanced tweaking is possible, even from the dashboard, whereas I prefer to embed such advanced hacks into a child theme.

XR’s architecture is set to serve most any purpose, making it a truly universal multi-purpose theme. Developers need only one theme as a base for unlimited applications of any purpose, including media and eCommerce.

Nothing can be more painful than when memories are stolen! Just imagine… This sadly came true at the end of 2012, when a series of heavy armed burglaries were carried out even here, in our romantic Noordhoek Valley! It hit even some of my dearest friends – and with the highly organized and professional gang focusing on money, jewellery and electronics – here went the brand-new digital camera and laptop. Gone! And with it, all the stored photos and memories…

When Memories are stolen

We so easily forget that in our age of digital photography, photos may still be printed now and then, however, most of them sit on our computers, laptops, ipads, on social networks genre Facebook, Flickr and Picasa or – ideally – on our own websites where we are in control – but meaning in the virtual world. If these costly electronic items disappear for one or another reason, we can still replace them. However, when memories are stolen it really hurts.

Sometimes, the dear ones on the photos are no longer around. Today, most people do not have the typical photo albums with ‘real’ pictures to show around in the family, so theft of our storage items can be a tragedy, as was in this particular case.

Luckily, we are a closely knit bunch of friends and I had regularly taken some photos with my good old NIKON Coolpix P90. Even some of my very first photos on a digital camera!

I pushed it and pushed it – but today was the day that I dug into my oooooooooold computer… In fact, I hardly got it up and running again! But finally I found many precious pictures to help over the loss. In such a dramatic situation one realizes how fast time flies and how many of our two- and four-legged friends have left us far too early. Therefore, if we can at least look at them again, it’s like they’re still around!

While my own private website is my personal choice – and I can only recommend it to all – the fact is that even a website can go down, get hacked or disappear (…so never save on good hosting and support to bail you out then!). But at least we can keep our images on the server, where they should be pretty safe. Although even servers get hacked and go down and even disappear. We’ve seen it all over the years. Funny world we’re living in!

So the lesson here is to ensure we keep our pictures in a safe place – offline and online. Backups are the motto!

XO has been created back in 2008 by Semiomantics and it has been developed to its latest version. The development has reached its ultimate limit with the experimental 3.5 version which has been abandoned. It is time to move on and to base Semiomantics’ new flagship theme on a new base, the XR.

Back when it was released, the XO was one of the best themes out there to gain Search Engine Visibility with most any content. The combination of a clean coded theme with Semiomantics Optimization lead to astonishing results for all users, irrespective of content and target.

Semiomantics XO Licenses were not the cheapest in the market, but definitely they were the best value for the money. If we are abandoning the good old XO framework and theme, it is because we are convinced that the most recent WordPress developments as well as the more general acceptance of  HTML5 and CSS3 open new possibilities and challenges to develop and optimize websites and their content.

XO was great right out of the box and it provided unlimited possibilities to configure and style the site without messing up the optimization. XO was revolutionary in as much as it promoted first of all the framework with its target keywords and then only the content. This lead to spectacular results and what we called excellent publishing.

Semiomantics XO

While XO development on the present base will stop, we are working on a new generation of XO: the new version will be released later this year and it will not constitute an upgrade of the existing XO but it will be a completely new XO Theme with exceptional features aiming mainly developers and taking into account a minimalist approach to development, leaving developers and designers utmost freedom of expression on a extremely flexible base. A Semiomantics Optimization Pack for that new framework is under development as well and will complete the new XO.

For the record: The existing XO version 3.4.x remains a great theme and I am sure it has still some great times to come, however, I would not anymore sell it as a modern high performance theme, namely if it is set up without the Semiomantics Optimization Pack.

I expect the new XO to be ready for release not before the second half of 2013. Existing license terms will apply, for new Licenses a new Pricing model will be applied.

The new universal theme developed by Semiomantics and virtually replacing the present XO at this stage is the XR, whereas the letter R stands for responsive. XR is a completely different story than XO, it is built on the base of some developments of Boilerplate, Bootstrap, new Semiomantics stuff and more last cry professional scripts.

XR is a truly universal theme as was XO and it adapts to most any purpose users may formulate.

While Happy Easter 2013 wishes are resounding from all over the world – be it from the new pope, Francis 1, to the old new president of the US, Barack Obama, to the countless names flooding our Email boxes – how happy and profound this day and celebration eventually will be depends on us. Ultimately, happiness is not to be found outside – otherwise material wealth would equal happiness – it’s something we all carry within us.

This year, 2013, as any year I can remember before it, the Happy Easter time marks a change in the year. A new season is upon us down here at the tip of South Africa: autumn! Punctually, the first autumn storms and rains have arrived and although we still have beautifully sunny days with bits of blue skies and the surfers on Noordhoek beach are having a ball, there’s no doubt that the temperatures are cooling down, the nights are shorter, darker and colder and Nature prepares for much heavier rains than we had so far.

Good Wishes for Madiba

For me, Easter is a joyful time of love, laughter and union. Most importantly, it’s a time to go within, to meditate, and search for that light that so often gets obscured by the darkness outside. That’s why I chose the picture above, Chapman’s Peak taken just a few days ago, as a reflection of my thought.

Last but not least, let’s all join the worldwide community of those who pray and are sending good wishes to Madiba – South Africa’s pillar of light, a living legend of humanity and peace!

Early this glorious Sunday morning, a message reached me that there were 20 stranded whales on Noordhoek Beach: “Can you come?” “I’ll be right there!” I answered and off I went, to assist in whatever way to help rescue at least one of these graceful creatures that form an important link in our evolution. That’s where I then spent the next 4 hours, kneeling in the icy water, until ‘our’ whale was finally transported to a safe place where it would be released back into the ocean. They spoke about Table Bay. As I write this, I pray he (or she?) has her life back and, one day, we see him/her frolicking in the bay and waving its huge tailfin!

Stranded whales on Noordhoek Beach

It’s not the first time we had stranded whales on Noordhoek Beach. A few years ago, there were 50 of them, a little further South towards Kommetjie. Those were very dramatic and challenging hours; I wrote about them, which gave rise to an interesting communication with professional animal communicators.

Strangely enough, a few days ago I still checked on the ‘to do’s’ and the ‘not to do’s’ in such a situation, which came handy when cooperating with the brilliant crew from Fish Hoek Sea Rescue.

Only yesterday, a friend informed me that about 20 whales had been spotted in Table Bay, which is very unusual for this time of the year. According to local papers, the SA Navy was doing some operations in the waters, which got both of us very nervous. Today we know that the terrible noise mankind creates in the depth of our oceans is destroying the way whales and dolphins communicate amongst themselves and around the world. They get completely disoriented and it may be one reason why they beach themselves. Our environmental consciousness should not end at our shores; it should include our seas – all of them all the way down.

On the positive side, it was again simply amazing and wonderful to see how a group of – mostly – strangers just got together with a common goal: to help a precious being survive, in this case. Everyone did it in a spirit of love and compassion – and we did it ‘until’. Nothing else was important; this had to be brought to a happy ending first. It was no ‘duty’, noone was ‘paid for it’ and nobody gave commands or controlled – that was only later once the trucks and loaders and the men in uniforms arrived. Everyone – mostly women and children and a few fabulous men – just saw where they could jump in and do their bit – powered by their free will and a passion for life and its beautiful manifestations!

As I applied whatever energy work I have learnt in my life, being in close contact with the head of the pilot whale at all times (with my hands and mind), I clearly had the feeling that our efforts and loving vibrations were received and deeply appreciated – and communicated to all the other whales that hopefully were also cared for as intensively as this one. “Intensive care” is the word – I just realize it! There was no time to look elsewhere, one had to remain fully focused to keep the animal upright at all times, to keep fresh water coming and flowing over it – without going down the blowhole. It was an irony to be that close to the sea and not able to just get it to swim off again. But the surf was crashing up the beach quite heavily and the wind was blasting sand all over us. But the creature went from being in a relatively weak state to being stable and even quite lively at times, giving us a bath. But perhaps that was just a way of connecting from its side and the fact was that many of us were in awe to be given such an opportunity to feel the sacredness that connects us all. At certain moments the animal vibrated very stressfully. With hindsight I believe it sensed when its less fortunate friends were euthanized; I only heard that later, when the rescued animal was safely on its way to new swimming grounds. I only know of two that were that fortunate. . .

I did prepare some video material but due to our catastrophic Internet lines at the moment – due to a broken Seacam cable I was told on Friday – all that is impossible right now. This little post here takes ages and I can only work with code as the visual editor doesn’t even respond! I don’t see the photo… so I publish fast and blindly! We had to take many chances today, this will be the last one – but what a day! Certainly, not without magic and wonder!

Whenever I leave my studio, at least one beautiful Citrus Swallowtail (Papilio demodocus) flits through the air and inspires me to go back in a hurry and get my digital camera: then the (photo) hunt is on! They never sit still! Only armed with a simple NIKON Coolpix P90 (…this will change very, very soon!) it’s extremely difficult to catch them as they flutter hectically from blossom to blossom, then lift high up into the warm summer air to disappear for a while – but, of course, they return to their favourite spots! That’s where I’m waiting for them… and the question is: how fast will my autofocus be?! I think they enjoy this game!

It must be the time: they are currently depositing their eggs singly underneath the leaves of the various citrus plants and trees in my garden and only hover for instances over flowers to sip some nectar and off they zoom again!

While you can see the natural colours on the original image of the Citrus Swallowtail above, I could obviously not tame my creative muscle and reworked things a bit in black & white tones using Adobe Photoshop CS6, my favourite online photo editing tool.

I’ve always been a Black & White Photography fan and I still believe it’s a good exercise to sometimes only focus on that in order to work on composition and values, fine graphics, light and shadow – and to expand and experiment to find new avenues, new possibilities and something that excites us to research further and explore. Since Digital Photography has become easily available to almost everybody – followed by all sorts of practical and handy mobile devices today – iphones, smartphones, ipads and the like – , everybody with a passion for photography has a fantastic tool at their fingertips to develop into an enjoyable hobby, meaningful work for family and friends, or a fulfilling profession.

We are living in incredible times – just open eyes and see! With camera or without it … first we’ve got to see it !

Today was the day to get fresh honey from the honey coombs in a wild tree in my garden – what a privilege to capture the delicious golden liquid bearing in mind that honey bees are on a sharp decline all over the world. A little drunken from a combination of smoke and honey, the little fellow below dries on my finger and will soon buzz off. When getting the honey coombs we want to ensure that no bee is harmed and can return safely to the hive and its queen.

Only a few people know that we owe about each third mouthfull of any food we eat to be healthy and strong to the services of the honey bee: it is crucially important to pollinate fruit trees and the many foods we grow for our own survival as a species.

It was Albert Einstein (I think, if I remember correctly…) who said that should the honey bee disappear from the planet the human being would follow shortly.

Not so in my garden… it’s part of my vision and environmental contribution to help ensure the honey bees are here to stay!

And by the way: I’m dedicating a whole chapter of the book I am currently writing to… the honeybee!
